An Generosity of Strangers: The Way a Person I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Secure the Role That Altered My Path

In the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to Europe with a companion. Since my travel mate was considering pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had planned a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a big 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, found a table, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did for a living, and I told him that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The Iraqi student came up to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but immediately told my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a place where anything feels possible – she responded: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for three years. One of the benefits was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his full name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in numerous aspects. I lacked the bravery or self-belief to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that gig at Columbia led me to a position in Switzerland where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
